How Much Does a Kitchen Renovation Cost in Calgary? (2026 Guide)

Three tiers, real numbers, and the things that drive kitchen renovation cost in Calgary in 2026, from someone who quotes them weekly. No 'it depends', actual ranges, with the line items behind them.

The single most-asked question we get on first site visits is how much a Calgary kitchen renovation costs. Most online answers give a range like "$25,000 to $80,000" or a useless cost-per-square-foot rule, neither of which helps a homeowner figure out what their actual project will cost. So this article is the breakdown we wish was easier to find: three concrete tiers, real recent numbers, and the line items behind each.

The Three Tiers

Calgary kitchen renovations in 2026 fall into three clear tiers based on scope. Most projects we deliver fit cleanly into one of them. The boundaries between tiers are real; the moment you cross from a same-footprint refresh into moving plumbing or removing walls, the project moves into a higher tier whether you wanted it to or not.

Tier 1: Same-footprint refresh ($35,000 – $65,000)

The kitchen layout stays the same. Cabinets get replaced (with semi-custom from local Calgary cabinet shops, painted shaker style, typical hardware). Counters get replaced (mid-range quartz). Backsplash gets replaced. Appliances stay or get a partial refresh. Sink and faucet are new. Existing electrical and plumbing are reused or minor adjustments are made. No structural changes, no wall removals, no major plumbing relocation.

This is the most-delivered Calgary kitchen renovation right now. Typical project includes: cabinet rebuild ($18,000-$28,000), quartz counters ($4,000-$7,000), backsplash ($1,500-$2,500), labour for demo and install ($8,000-$14,000), painting ($2,500-$4,000), and minor electrical/plumbing ($1,500-$3,500). Total: $35,000-$65,000 for an average-size Calgary kitchen.

Tier 2: Layout change + custom cabinetry ($65,000 – $110,000)

The footprint changes. A wall comes out (often load-bearing, with an engineered beam required), an island is added or expanded, plumbing relocates, electrical service often needs upgrading. Cabinetry is fully custom from a local Calgary or Okotoks shop. Counters are upgraded to thicker quartz, exotic quartz, or stone. Appliances are partially or fully replaced, sometimes upgrading to integrated.

Typical project: custom cabinetry ($30,000-$45,000), upgraded counters ($7,000-$12,000), engineered beam and structural ($6,000-$15,000), full plumbing/electrical reroute ($5,000-$8,000), tile and flooring tie-ins ($4,000-$8,000), demo and install labour ($14,000-$22,000). Total: $65,000-$110,000.

Tier 3: Full gut + premium finishes ($110,000 – $180,000+)

Complete kitchen rebuild. Often part of a larger main-floor renovation. Custom cabinetry to the ceiling with specialty finishes. Slab counters in stone, exotic quartz, or quartzite. Integrated appliance suite (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele typical). Custom lighting design. Sometimes a butler's pantry or walk-in pantry addition. Full electrical service upgrade and panel work. Often structural changes including engineered beams.

Typical project: custom cabinetry to ceiling ($45,000-$75,000), slab counters ($10,000-$20,000), integrated appliance suite ($15,000-$35,000), full electrical including 200-amp upgrade ($8,000-$15,000), structural ($8,000-$20,000), labour ($25,000-$40,000). Plus pantry additions, custom millwork, lighting design, and the various premium-finish elements that define this tier. Total: $110,000-$180,000+.

What Drives the Price

Within any tier, four variables drive most of the cost variation:

Cabinetry choice

The single biggest cost lever in any Calgary kitchen. Semi-custom cabinetry (local Calgary shops, painted MDF shaker, basic hardware) lands at the low end of the range. Custom cabinetry (full custom door styles, specialty finishes, premium hardware) lands at the high end. Big-box and import cabinets are cheaper but produce poor outcomes; we do not install them.

Counter material

Quartz at $80-130/sq ft installed is the standard. Slab quartzite, marble, or specialty stones can push to $200-400/sq ft. Counter cost scales with material choice and slab size requirements.

Appliance suite

Stock builder-grade appliances are a few thousand dollars total. Mid-range (KitchenAid, Bosch) is $8,000-$15,000. Premium integrated (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele) is $20,000-$45,000+ depending on selection. Integration with cabinetry adds installation cost.

Structural and mechanical scope

Same-footprint kitchens have minimal structural and mechanical work. Layout changes (particularly load-bearing wall removals, plumbing relocations, and electrical upgrades) add real cost. Engineered beams alone often add $6,000-$15,000. Service-panel upgrades to 200 amps add $4,000-$8,000.

How to Get an Accurate Number for Your Kitchen

The only way to get a real number is a 60-minute on-site visit. We measure the existing kitchen, look at the mechanical systems, identify any structural or code constraints, talk through what you want, and produce a written line-item estimate within a few business days. Our estimate breaks out labour, rough materials, and finish materials so you can see exactly what is fixed and what depends on selections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is kitchen renovation more expensive in Calgary than 5 years ago?

Three main drivers. Cabinetry costs have risen, both materials and the skilled-labour rates at Calgary cabinet shops. Trade rates across the renovation industry are up 25-40% since 2020 due to demand and trade shortage. And specific finish materials (porcelain tile, quartz, integrated appliances) have all moved up. The aggregate effect is roughly 30-50% higher pricing on equivalent kitchens compared to 2020.

Can I do a Calgary kitchen renovation for under $30,000?

Realistically, no, not for a kitchen rebuild that includes cabinetry replacement, counter replacement, and appliance integration. You can do meaningful kitchen updates in that range (repaint cabinets, replace counters and backsplash, upgrade hardware, replace sink and faucet) but a full rebuild starts at roughly $35,000 in 2026 and that is a same-footprint refresh with semi-custom cabinets and stock counters.

What is the most expensive single line item in a Calgary kitchen renovation?

Cabinetry, almost always. Custom-built local cabinetry for a typical Calgary kitchen runs $20,000 to $50,000+ depending on size, materials, and finish complexity. Counters are second ($4,000 to $12,000 for quartz or granite, more for slab marble). Appliances are third if you choose integrated or premium ($8,000 to $30,000+ for a full suite).

Should I budget for "surprises" or insist on a fixed price?

Both. A good contractor provides a fixed price for the scope you have agreed to, plus a transparent contingency line item for the most-likely surprises (hidden plumbing issues, electrical upgrades when load is increased, structural discoveries when walls open). The fixed-price scope should be 90% of the project; the contingency should be 5-10%. If a contractor refuses to give a fixed price for the agreed scope, that is a sign to keep looking.
